4D Health & Safety Excellence
Working for over a year without an accident is something that construction companies can usually only dream of, but our 4D contract achieved it. For the 16 months up to the end of March 2009, all 4D’s work was carried out without any major accidents to report to the Health and Safety Executive – cumulatively more than 4.2 million man hours without an incident.
A number of factors are relevant here:
- A health and safety passport is issued to every employee taking part in 4D’s Safety Health and Environment (SHE) training at the training centre in Lewes, East Sussex. The passport course is mandatory for anyone working on site or visiting regularly and covers the basics of working safely on construction sites to avoid hazards. Each member of staff who successfully completes the training is issued with a photo ID ‘passport’ to carry with them when they are on site to show they have received appropriate training. Since being introduced, over 4000 passports have been issued by the SHE team.
- 4D's site charity initiative encourages workers to focus on safety every moment of every day during construction. As part of the scheme, for every accident-free day worked, Southern Water and 4D donate 30p to a charity nominated by employees. A reportable accident means that the charity pot is halved and a second means it’s taken away entirely, so it’s in everyone’s interest to work safely. So far, this initiative has raised over £140,000 for charity.
- Four of 4D's sites have won an award at the Considerate Constructors Scheme Annual National Awards 2009. 4D also holds four RoSPA gold awards for excellence in occupational health and safety management. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Award is given to companies that have achieved well-developed occupational health and safety.
