Corporate Responsibility Report 2009

Climate Change

Climate change poses a risk to all sectors of the economy, and we’re determined to ensure that we can deliver essential services no matter what challenges we’re faced with.

Our approach to climate change is two-fold:

1) Our ability to adapt to the consequences of climate extremes
2) The scope to which we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

We are working on both of these to ensure we can continue to provide our service to customers.

Adaptation

We have responded to the predicted impacts of inevitable climate change by improving the strategic models we use that help us determine the impact on our services and assets. For instance, we have modelled water supply and demand as part of our water resources plan, and we’ve predicted what impact drier summers and wetter winters will have on wastewater network flooding. More details of how we’ll respond to these major challenges can be found in our final business plan

Mitigation

Understanding and reducing our emissions both now and in the future is essential if we’re to meet our targets. We’ve integrated carbon thinking into our investment proposals for 2010-2015 and are looking at innovations that could reduce our emissions even further.
