Building Sustainability in the Workplace
Later this year, hundreds of our people will relocate to Grasmere House, a new, purpose-built facility at our Warrington headquarters.
Grasmere House has been awarded a ‘very good’ BREEAM (the Buildings Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating. This recognises the way we’ve incorporated features into the fabric of the building to increase energy and water efficiency, reduce waste and increase recycling. These include:
- Sensors on lights throughout the building. These switch on and off according to occupancy and ambient lighting levels
- Low energy hand dryers. 30% more efficient than conventional hand dryers these are fitted in all the washrooms
- A rainwater harvesting system. This reduces potable water demand, specifically for use in flushing toilets
- Waterless urinals. These will save an estimated 250 litres of water per day per unit when compared with standard ‘timed flush’ urinals.
- Efficient and accessible multi function printers. Reducing the need for large numbers of printers, copiers and fax machines, and with default settings designed to maximise paper use, these will reduce waste
- Recycling hubs. One hub – comprising recycling bins for paper, plastic, cans and general waste – will be installed for every 25 employees. Coupled with the removal of individual waste bins, these enable the segregation of office waste at source, increasing the proportion of waste suitable for recycling and reducing volumes destined for landfill.
The activities at Grasmere House align with a bigger project to improve workplace sustainability across the business that’s going to be delivered during the next year. This project is geared towards improved efficiency of resource use, reduced carbon impact and increased employee engagement.
