Since its conception in December 2007, we have maintained and expanded our network of carbon champions across our business to over 40 people. Their key role is to inspire and engage others to take action on reducing our overall carbon footprint.
Some examples of activities carried out in 2008/09 by our carbon champions include:
- Trialling new techniques and technologies for holding more climate-friendly meetings to cut down on travel. Our treasury team has embraced the use of video-conferencing and even conducted its annual meeting via a three-way video link
- The Legionella control team has chopped its combined mileage in half by opting to stay overnight when team members visit our wastewater treatment works in the Lake District to test for bacteria
- Colleagues on our gas contract spotted an opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint and keep drivers safe by fitting speed limiters as a matter of course to new vehicles, at no extra cost. In conjunction with this they’ve also designed and placed stickers on the vans to let people know.
Other activities that have been happening across the business are:
- Using more recycled office supplies such as stationery
- Carrying out an office water audit
- Making a personal carbon pledge and encouraging others to do the same
- Giving a team briefing on carbon
- Encouraging energy efficiency throughout the workplace
- Harnessing carbon reduction ideas
Our carbon champions are integral to our overall carbon strategy and will continue to be over the next year. We hope to further expand our network to deliver more carbon saving across the business.
