Depot and operational site waste
We’re continuing work to rationalise the waste management on our water and wastewater operational sites so that we can get more value from waste. Using our experiences from our electricity and gas depots, we’re working to apply similar waste management techniques across a larger number of sites. Two sites are piloting the use of separate recycling skips in order to gain better value from their wastes. You can read more about these sites in the case study below.
Waste is produced during gas and electricity network activities and brought back to our depot sites. These can include excavated material, metals, plastics and electrical equipment. This year our depots produced 8,867 tonnes of waste of which 87% was sent to recycling centres.
Transformer Oil
We have commissioned a new process this year at our Central Oil Reprocessing Depot (CORD) which will enable us to re-use more transformer oil in our electricity business. You can read more about this process in the case study below.
