Corporate Responsibility Report 2009

Last year we installed a new £3.5 million Ultra-Violet (UV) disinfection plant at Heaton Park water treatment works to meet water quality requirements.

Heaton Park is a large family park near Prestwich, four miles north of Manchester City Centre.  It’s a venue for many sports and leisure activities, and hosts events and school visits throughout the year. Our Heaton Park reservoir and treatment works is situated on the north-western edge of the park. It was therefore essential that we applied our processes to ensure sustainability was considered throughout the project.

We kept disturbance from the building work to a minimum and ensured that the new UV building was designed with community impact in mind, having as little visual impact and disturbance as possible on the surrounding area.

The building’s look and feel was carefully chosen in consultation with the local council’s planning department to ensure the structure blended in with its environment. In addition to sensitive design our approach also ensured that we were a good neighbour in the community during construction.  Deliveries and vehicle movements to and from the site were kept to a minimum as access to the site was through the public park.

The new UV building was designed to nestle within the embankment of the existing service reservoir. This posed technical difficulties in making sure that the embankment was solid and safe both during construction and after the work was finished.

In addition, as 80% of the building is buried within the earth embankment our carbon tools demonstrated that it’s also very heat-efficient, reducing its long-term carbon footprint.
