We want to enhance recreation on our larger estates by increasing visitor understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of our land.
Activities include abseiling, canoeing, orienteering, fell running, horse rides, mountain biking, mountain rescue, military training, Duke of Edinburgh awards, vintage car rallies, sponsored / guided walks, and dog training. Many of our reservoirs support clubs including sailing, wind surfing, canoeing, fishing and water skiing. Many events require the permission of the landowner too. By working with event organisers, we can minimise damage such as erosion, avoid sensitive habitats and nest sites and prevent double booking of facilities. Further information can be found on our main website.
The table below shows the total income for recreational activities and the amount waived in the financial year 2008/9.

South Pennines Off Road Initiative (SPORVI)
Countryside Rangers and Headwork's Controllers have been working together in problem catchment areas. We’ve worked in multi- agency partnerships with the Police and local authorities across the South and West Pennines to combat illegal access and misuse of water catchment land by four wheel drive vehicles and motocross / bike riders.
Issues:
- Damage to SSSI habitat and areas of high landscape value
- Landscape erosion problems and increased water quality risk
- Destruction and disturbance of ground nesting birds
- Damage to property
- Injury to the public and livestock
- Bikes riding on footpaths and bridleways risking injury to legitimate users
Results:
- 66 Police warnings (riding on moorland in a manner causing annoyance)
- 44 seizures
- 10 fixed penalties
- 8 summons
- 7 arrests
