Pipe team unearth rare remains

One of Lancashire’s most important and exciting archaeological finds was uncovered during a pipeline project at Poulton-le- Fylde.

Two Roman roundhouses, thought to date back to the second century, were discovered on grazing land by our employees during preliminary excavations at the start of a £10 million sewer improvement scheme for the area. The discovery was made within hours of work beginning.

Finds like this are very rare in Lancashire, and especially in this area. There are only two other Roman roundhouses known of in the county – one outside Lancaster and one near Lathom.

We held an open day at the excavation site for local people. There was considerable interest – more than 500 of our neighbours, including 60 schoolchildren, turned up and there was also press and TV coverage.
