Each year we spend around £1.4 billion with local, national and international suppliers. This spend is managed by our category teams, who have had advanced training and coaching in sustainable supply chain techniques. As a result, we’ve been able to significantly improve the sustainability performance of our supply chain management.
Last year we set out our sustainable supply chain strategy and appointed a dedicated sustainable supply chain manager to help carry it out. Our strategy is based on the Government’s Flexible Framework for sustainable supply chain as set out in the national action plan ‘Procuring the Future’.
The framework is sponsored by both Defra and the Treasury - and balances economic, environmental and social considerations such as whole life costing, expenditure analysis and best value. Our performance is externally and independently verified – and shows that we have achieved our target performance in all areas.
Our performance has been recognised externally by BitC in them awarding us a Big Tick.
