Corporate Responsibility Report 2009

Thirlmere access improvements

We’ve been making improvements to existing roads, tracks and permissive paths at our Thirlmere estate to enhance the visitor experience, bring more control to access and generate income for estate upkeep.

This work attracted the interest of partners seeking to further develop sustainable transport in Cumbria and in particular cycling. Following on from investment in 2006/7 where car parks at Thirlmere were upgraded to meet Disability Discrimination Legislation, we’ve continued to make improvements to car park layout, land and surfaces. This year Armboth car park was redesigned to provide more room and safer vehicle access.

Elsewhere, we have worked with our partners, the Lake District National Park Authority and Cumbria County Council, to secure Adventure Capital funds. Together with our own matched funding we’ve used this money to upgrade and join up several kilometres of forest road to a standard suitable for family cycling.

Eventually, a complete circuit of the valley will be created, with information links to interesting sites and features on the estate. Other elements of this plan include new signs and leaflets, highway crossings and the reduction of the west road around the reservoir from a highway to pedestrian and family cycling only.
