Corporate Responsibility Report 2009

Reducing supplier carbon footprint

supplier carbon workshopWe’re committed to tackling climate change. As well as concentrating on cutting our own carbon emissions, we are working with our priority suppliers to help them measure, manage and reduce their own emissions – and the emissions of their suppliers.

While we encourage all our suppliers to take part, we need to be realistic as to how far up the supply chain we take responsibility for. In some cases, we will insist that our suppliers measure and manage their carbon emissions; while only encouraging others to play their part.

A major problem with this approach is that it relies on suppliers having the right data to hand – and this is sometimes not readily available. To alleviate this, we have collaborated with five other companies to develop a system for suppliers to measure, manage and reduce their own carbon foot-print. The key aspect of this is that suppliers receive independent validation and certification of their data which enhances their reputation and adds credibility.

We fully support Business in the Community’s (BitC) May Day network – to provide local, regional and national support to suppliers on reducing their carbon emissions.
Our main supply chain website guides suppliers to where they can get help.
