Corporate Responsibility Report 2009

A tale of two sites

In last years report we told you of a new environmental compliance team in our wastewater business. This year the team all passed their Waste Management Industry Training Advisory Board (WAMITAB) and BTEC Professional Diploma in Environmental and Waste legislation exams. The team have been helped by two sites in wastewater operations who decided that recycling their waste was the way to go.

With recycling of waste becoming the norm at home two of our wastewater sites - Ellesmere Port and Preston – have installed recycling skips to improve their waste management.

Working in conjunction with the environmental compliance team, employees on both sites set about making improvements to the way they managed waste on site. After identifying their main wastes on site - wood, paper, cardboard, plastics and metal – the teams worked out the best ways of managing the wastes.

Separating their waste more effectively has also enabled the sites to get income from some of their wastes. 50 per cent of our waste that would have gone to landfill from the two sites is now being recycled, which is a great plus for sustainability.

The experience from these two sites is enabling us to see how we can expand this practice to other operational sites.
